WELLNESS EXAMS

Wellness Exams

Why do wellness exams matter?

Regular wellness exams are an important part of supporting your pet’s long-term health, comfort, and quality of life.

At Nobscot Pet Hospital, Dr. Erin Bryce will perform a comprehensive nose-to-tail physical examination during every wellness visit. This includes a thorough evaluation of your pet’s eyes, ears, dental health, skin, heart, lungs, joints and mobility, muscle condition, neurological function, behavior, abdomen, body condition, and overall health.

Our approach combines gold-standard veterinary medicine with individualized care tailored to your pet’s specific age, breed, lifestyle, and medical needs.

EVERY WELLNESS EXAM INCLUDES:

Additional Testing Recommendations

Routine diagnostic screening is an essential part of preventive care. At every examination we will make a plan for your pet's care and future needs. This plan will include our recommendation for annual to semi-annual bloodwork, fecal testing, and urinalysis for most pets. These tests help monitor organ function, screen for parasites and disease, and identify health concerns early, often before symptoms develop.

Tailored Preventative Care

Dr. Bryce will also provide recommendations for preventive care, including vaccinations and year-round parasite prevention, which are important for protecting your pet’s health throughout every stage of life.

Oral and Dental Health Recommendations

Oral health is another essential component of overall wellness. Dr. Bryce will evaluate your pet’s dental health and discuss recommendations for home dental care and professional dental comprehensive cleaning and assessments. Studies have shown that pets receiving regular dental prophylactic cleanings can have 2-6 additional years improved health, comfort, and quality of life.

Nutrition and Exercise Recommendations

Every pet will also receive individualized recommendations for nutrition, exercise, and weight management based on physical examination findings, age, body conformation, activity level, and overall health status.

Life-Stage Specific Recommendations

For middle-aged and senior pets, we provide additional age-specific and species-specific screening recommendations to support healthy aging and early detection of medical conditions.

WORKING TOGETHER FOR YOUR PET'S CARE

One of the most valuable parts of your pet’s wellness visit is having the most current information available before the examination. Prior to the appointment we will reach out to you with appropriate questions about past care in order to provide the most thorough and personalized care possible.

VACCINATIONS & PARASITE PREVENTION

VACCINATIONS AND PARASITE PREVENTION

Why do vaccines and parasite prevention matter?

Protecting your pet from preventable illness is one of the most important things you can do as a pet owner. Our veterinary team participates in ongoing training to provide individualized recommendations tailored to your pet’s lifestyle, travel habits, and life stage risk factors.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations play an essential role in preventing disease and protecting the long term health of dogs and cats. Preventive care begins early in life and continues through all life-stages. Based on your pet’s age, lifestyle, travel habits, and individual risk factors, Dr. Bryce and her team will develop a vaccination plan tailored to your pet’s specific needs and current disease risks. Every vaccine plan at Nobscot Pet Hospital is tailored to your individual pet, never one size fits all.

We offer non-adjuvented feline vaccines to minimize additional risks for our feline patients and combination vaccinations to minimize the likelihood of vaccine reactions in all patients.

Please let our team know about any future travel and life-style changes that may impact your pet’s vaccination plans.

Flea, Tick, and Heartworm Prevention

Parasites are more than just a nuisance. Fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes can transmit serious diseases to both pets and people, and heartworm disease can be life threatening if left untreated. Our veterinary team will recommend a prevention protocol that fits your pet's lifestyle - including travel risks. We carry a selection of trusted preventive products to ensure your pets have the right prevention plan in place for year-round prevention.

Intestinal Parasite Screening

Many intestinal parasites, including roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, tapeworms, and giardia, may show no obvious symptoms in the early stages, making routine screening an important part of your pet's preventive care.

Our veterinary clinic utilizes advanced intestinal parasite screening with antigen testing to check for the presence of parasites, sometimes before eggs are produced. Early detection allows us to recommend prompt and appropriate treatment while also tailoring a prevention plan based on your pet’s lifestyle and environmental risk factors.

NUTRITION & BEHAVIOR CONSULTATION

Nutrition and behavior consultation

Why are nutrition and behavioral care important?

The most effective veterinary care is proactive, not reactive. At Nobscot Pet Hospital, we partner with you to build healthy habits, catch concerns early, and give your pet the strongest foundation possible at every stage of life.

Nutrition & Weight Management

What and how your pet eats directly impacts how they feel, move, and age. Our veterinary team provides personalized nutrition guidance for dogs and cats at every life stage, from growing puppies and kittens to adult and senior companions. As your pet changes over time, so do their dietary and mobility needs. Whether your pet needs to lose a few pounds, gain healthy weight, utilize a unique feeding setting, or transition to a new diet, we will work with you to build a realistic and effective nutrition plan. Maintaining a healthy weight reduces the risk of diabetes, joint disease, heart conditions, and a range of other preventable health issues.

Behavioral Consultations

Your pet’s daily routine plays an important role in their overall wellbeing and how they interact with the world around them. Dr. Bryce and her team work closely with pet owners to develop healthy behavioral habits that support both mental and
physical health.

A behavior consultation can be especially beneficial if you have noticed changes in your pet’s behavior or ongoing concerning behaviors. Changes in bathroom habits, appetite, sleep patterns, vocalization, or activity level may indicate an underlying medical or behavioral condition. Signs such as hiding, fear, anxiety, aggression, or simply feeling that “something seems off” should not be ignored. Early intervention is often the key to timely diagnosis and effective treatment.

Just as in human healthcare, both physical and behavioral health are important parts of your pet’s overall wellness. During the consultation, Dr. Bryce will evaluate these factors and work with you to develop both short and long term behavioral goals tailored to your pet’s individual needs.

Recommendations may include adjustments to the home environment, daily routines, feeding practices, enrichment activities, or medications. Follow-up care is an essential part of the process, allowing us to reassess progress, make adjustments when needed, and continue supporting your pet’s mental and physical wellbeing every step of the way.

DIAGNOSTIC TESTING & IMAGING

Diagnostic Testing & Imaging

Why does fast accurate diagnosis matter?

When your pet is not feeling their best, timely answers make all the difference. Our in-house diagnostic capabilities allow our veterinary team to assess your dog or cat quickly and begin treatment without unnecessary delays.

Digital X-Ray & Ultrasound

When your pet needs answers, our advanced imaging capabilities help us find them quickly and accurately. Digital radiography allows our veterinary team to evaluate your dog or cat's bones, joints, chest, and abdominal organs with exceptional clarity. Our X-rays can be sent instantaneously to Board-certified Veterinary Radiologists who can assist with quick diagnosis of complex diseases. This means we can provide same-day testing and therapy for difficult cases including specialist-level support. Ultrasound provides a real time view of soft tissue structures, making it an invaluable tool for assessing the heart, liver, kidneys, bladder, and more. Both services are performed in house, meaning faster results and less stress for your pet.

In-House Laboratory Testing

Our on-site veterinary laboratory allows us to run comprehensive blood panels, urinalysis, cytology, and other diagnostic tests and receive results within minutes rather than days. Dr. Bryce can make timely, informed recommendations about your pet's care during the same visit, without the anxiety of waiting. Rapid lab access is especially critical in urgent situations, and it allows us to monitor pets managing chronic conditions with greater precision and efficiency.  Preventative care testing performed in-hospital can identify concerns early and develop a long term care plan without delay.  Dr. Bryce will review and discuss your pet’s results with you directly, helping provide clarity when managing complex conditions and ensuring you feel informed and involved in every step of your pet’s care.

Complex Health Screenings and Specialist Testing

Nobscot Pet Hospital has access to advanced health screening and specialized diagnostic testing tailored to your pet’s age, breed, and clinical signs. These tests include but are not limited to:

      • Pathologist evaluated cytology and histopathology are essential tools in the diagnosis of many diseases and provide detailed information to guide treatment decisions.
      • Culture and sensitivity testing helps identify the specific bacteria involved in an infection and determines which medications are most effective. This allows us to create individualized treatment plans for your pet’s condition.
      • The IDEXX Cancer DX test is a valuable screening tool for detecting common cancers, particularly in younger patients of predisposed breeds and older patients who may be at increased risk.
      • Specialized hormone testing supports the diagnosis and management of a variety of endocrine disorders, including thyroid disease, pituitary and adrenal disorders, and parathyroid disease, among others.

SURGERY & ANESTHESIA

Surgery and Anesthesia

Why does surgical experience matter?

Every surgery, whether routine or complex, requires precision, preparation, and attentive aftercare. Our veterinary surgical team is committed to the safety and comfort of every canine and feline patient from pre-op through full recovery.
Dr. Erin Bryce has extensive experience in both complex soft tissue and oral surgery, and she has also taught these techniques to both new and experienced veterinarians. With more than a decade of surgical experience, Dr. Bryce works closely with pet owners to provide clear guidance and support, helping them feel confident and informed when navigating both routine and advanced surgical care.

Spay and Neuter Services

Spaying and neutering are among the most common beneficial procedures we perform at Nobscot Pet Hospital. Prior to surgery, Dr. Bryce and her trained staff can discuss the risks and benefits of this surgery for your pet - and the appropriate time for your pet based on projected size and breed.
Beyond preventing unwanted litters, these surgeries offer significant long term health benefits for both canine and feline patients, including a reduced risk of certain cancers and behavioral concerns. Our veterinary team takes every precaution to ensure your pet's comfort and safety before, during, and after the procedure. We will walk you through what to expect at every step so you feel informed and at ease.

Soft Tissue and Select Orthopedic Surgery

Dr. Bryce and our veterinary surgical team is experienced in a broad range of soft tissue and select orthopedic procedures, including mass removals, gastrointestinal surgery, bladder surgery, ocular surgery, airway surgery, biopsy collection, wound repair, digit and limb amputation and others. Every case is approached with careful planning and individualized care. Prior to any procedure, we conduct a thorough pre-surgical evaluation to assess your pet's overall health and minimize risk. Our goal is always to provide the safest, most effective surgical outcome for your dog, cat, or small animal, with clear communication to you throughout the entire process.

Some procedures may require additional pain management or specialized aftercare. These considerations will be discussed with you during the preoperative consultation so you know what to expect before, during, and after surgery.
For pets with multiple or complex medical conditions, we may recommend referral to board certified specialists such as cardiologists or internal medicine specialists for additional testing prior to surgery. This helps ensure the safest possible experience for your pet. Every recommendation we make is guided by your pet’s best interest.

Anesthesia Monitoring & Pain Management

The safety of your pet during and after surgery is our highest priority. Every patient under anesthesia at Nobscot Pet Hospital is continuously monitored by a dedicated veterinary team member tracking heart rate, respiration rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, CO2 levels, respiratory quality, anesthetic depth, pulse quality, perfusion, temperature, and other factors throughout the procedure. We use modern, carefully selected anesthetic protocols tailored to each individual animal. Post-operative pain management is equally important to us, and we will send your pet home with a clear care plan to ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery.
A safe and effective anesthetic experience begins before your pet arrives at the hospital. Stress and anxiety can increase the amount of anesthetic medication required, which may affect safety and recovery. In some cases, we may recommend pre-visit medications to help reduce stress and improve the anesthetic experience. If you think your pet may benefit from this approach, please let us know. All patients are offered pre-anesthetic anti-nausea medication to help decrease anesthetic doses and help your pet recover more comfortably. A proactive approach to anesthetic planning helps promote the best possible outcomes for your pet.

DENTAL HEALTH & ORAL SURGERY

Dental Health and Oral Surgery

Why is pet dental health so important?

Oral disease is one of the most common and overlooked conditions in dogs and cats. Our veterinary dental services go beyond a simple cleaning to support whole-body health for your canine or feline companion.

Professional Dental Cleanings

A Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment (COHAT) is the cornerstone of good oral health for your dog or cat. Unlike at-home brushing, a veterinary dental cleaning allows our team to remove plaque and tartar buildup both above and below the gum line, where periodontal disease begins. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia to keep your pet still and comfortable, allowing for a complete and safe cleaning experience. Most adult dogs and cats benefit from a professional cleaning once a year, though some pets may need more frequent care based on their individual oral health.

In addition to cleaning and polishing teeth, a complete dental chart will be created to assess every tooth. Dr. Bryce will make recommendations for your pet’s oral care based on this thorough examination and dental x-rays.

Digital Dental X-Rays

Much of what affects your pet's oral health is invisible to the naked eye. Digital dental radiography allows our veterinary team to evaluate the roots of your dog or cat's teeth and the surrounding bone structure, revealing issues like tooth root abscesses, bone loss, and unerupted, resorbed, or fractured teeth that would otherwise go undetected. Dental X-rays the standard of care and always recommended for every dental procedure at Nobscot Pet Hospital, giving us a complete picture of your pet's oral health so nothing is missed.

Oral Surgery and Periodontal Disease Treatment

Periodontal disease is the most common health condition diagnosed in adult dogs and cats, and left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss, chronic pain, and systemic inflammation affecting the heart, kidneys, and liver. Our veterinary team is experienced in diagnosing and treating all stages of periodontal disease, from early gingivitis to more advanced cases requiring extractions or deep cleaning.

Dr. Erin Bryce has more than a decade of experience performing both routine and complex oral and dental surgery. She will review treatment options with you prior to anesthesia to ensure you understand the recommended plan and available alternatives. In some cases, referral to a board certified veterinary dentist may be recommended, and our team can coordinate these referrals when needed.

We also offer dental laser therapy to help reduce gingivitis following the removal of plaque and tartar. Dr. Bryce may recommend additional treatments such as dental sealants or periodontal therapies to best support your pet’s individual oral health needs.

After every comprehensive oral health assessment and treatment, we provide guidance on at home dental care, recommended dental products, and follow up care to help maintain your pet’s oral health between professional visits.

SENIOR PET CARE & CHRONIC ILLNESS

Senior Pet Care and Chronic Illness

Why do senior pets need specialized care?

As dogs, cats, and other small animals age, their health needs evolve. All pets deserve to age with comfort and dignity. Dr. Bryce will collaborate with you to develop individualized wellness plans that address the unique challenges of your pets, from early disease detection to ongoing comfort and quality of life.

Senior Wellness Screenings

As pets age, the likelihood of developing health conditions increases significantly, which is why the gold-standard and Dr. Bryce’s recommendation is more frequent wellness visits and routine screening panels for older animals. Our senior wellness exams go beyond the basics, incorporating bloodwork, urinalysis, blood pressure checks, and a thorough physical evaluation designed to detect early signs of disease when intervention is most effective. Catching a condition early can make an enormous difference in your pet's long term comfort and quality of life.

Additional assessments including evaluation of cognitive decline, mobility and neurological changes, ocular and skin health all play a part in a thorough senior pet evaluation.

Arthritis & Pain Management & Laser Therapy

Arthritis is one of the most common and underrecognized conditions in dogs and cats. Many pets instinctively mask their discomfort, so subtle changes like moving more slowly, hesitating on stairs, or sleeping more than usual can be easy to miss. Dr. Bryce and the Nobscot Pet Hospital team are skilled at identifying the signs of joint pain and developing individualized management plans that may include supplements and medication, laser therapy, weight management, nutritional support, and lifestyle modifications.

Laser is one of our safest options for pets with arthritis. We offer laser therapy sessions to help with comfort and mobility for acute pain (from just after surgery to long-term arthritis pain).

Our goal is to keep your senior pet moving comfortably and enjoying the activities they love for as long as possible.

Chronic Disease Management

Conditions like chronic kidney disease, hyperthyroidism in cats, hypothyroidism in dogs, Cushing's disease, diabetes, IBD, immune-mediated diseases, atopic allergic dermatitis (allergies), chronic dermatological diseases, neuropathies, hepatopathies, ocular diseases, and neoplasias are unfortunately common in our pet populations. Many require consistent veterinary oversight to manage effectively. Dr. Bryce and her team work closely with you to monitor your pet's condition through regular lab work and check-ins, adjusting treatment plans as needed to keep them stable and comfortable. Managing a chronic illness in your pet can feel overwhelming, and we are here to provide clear guidance, compassionate support, and expert veterinary care every step of the way.

Quality of Life Consultations

As our beloved pets age, it is difficult to assess comfort and quality of life. Dr. Bryce offers Quality of Life consultations to discuss your pet’s life-stage, comfort, disease-status, cognitive status, mobility, fear and anxiety score, and other markers of quality of life. Together we can make a plan for assessment at home, and how to give your pet comfort, dignity, and help you make the compassionate choices regarding end of life care. We perform humane euthanasia and offer cremation services.

BEYOND THE EXAM ROOM

What other services does Nobscot Pet Hospital offer?

At Nobscot Pet Hospital, our commitment to your pet extends beyond traditional veterinary care. From routine nail trims to international travel documentation, we offer a range of additional services designed to support your pet's comfort, safety, and wellbeing at every turn.

Microchipping

Microchips are an amazing tool for lost-pet identification and are required for all dogs re-entering the United States after international travel. We perform microchipping for all dogs and cats. If you are planning on traveling internationally, please let us know as soon as possible as many countries have complex and months-long processes prior to travel or return to the US.

Pedicures

We perform pedicures for dogs, cats, and other pocket-pets.Some pets are not comfortable having their feet handled or their nails trimmed. If your pet becomes stressed or is unable to tolerate the procedure, we will pause and may recommend trying again at a later visit or using pre visit medication to reduce anxiety.

Our priority is to ensure every pet feels safe and experiences as little fear and stress as possible during veterinary care. In some cases, sedation may be recommended to safely complete nail trims for pets who are highly fearful or reactive. Our goal is to create a consistently safe and positive experience for your pet throughout their life, not only during a single visit.

Interstate and International Health Certificates & Consultation

Dr. Bryce is USDA APHIS accredited and has over a decade of completing international travel certificates from multiple US states and she is accredited for all species. International pet travel requirements change frequently, and advance planning is essential to help ensure a smooth travel experience for both you and your pet.

We recommend scheduling a travel consultation as soon as you anticipate traveling. During this appointment, we can review the documentation required for your destination, discuss travel recommendations, and ensure your pet receives any necessary vaccinations, testing, treatments, and health evaluations required for travel.

According to USDA guidelines, pets traveling between states may require an interstate health certificate depending on the destination and species. In addition, many airlines require a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection issued within 10 days of travel. Our team will help guide you through these requirements to ensure your pet is properly prepared for travel.
